ABOUT:

The Attic Bookstore is a used bookstore located inside the Lancaster Community Library.  It was renamed after Dee Whichard, who was a founding member and an integral part of its success.  She was dedicated in supporting the Lancaster Community Library, and the store was renamed in her memory.

Dee's Attic resells gently read books in all subjects at reasonable prices.  We rely on the generous donations from members of the community, and the store's income directly supports the Lancaster Community Library.

We are always accepting donations of gently read books, music CD's, DVD's, Audio Books and LP's.  You can bring donations to the Library during our operating hours.  Please call (804) 435-1729 ext. 28 for more information on how to donate.

Ancestry Library has unparalleled coverage of the United States and the United Kingdom, including census data, vital statistics, church, court, and immigration records, as well as record collections from Canada and other areas. Its valuable content is a strong complement to HeritageQuest™ Online.
To use this database you must use an onsite Library computer.

The Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library complex is located in the heart of Lancaster County on Virginia’s Northern Neck. The Museum/Library was established in 1958 and took the name Mary Ball Washington to honor the mother of the nation's first president. Mary Ball was born in Lancaster County, just eight miles from the Museum. The Museum seeks to recapture the stories and the rich history of the people of Virginia's Northern Neck. The Museum’s collections include several historically significant buildings in the village of Lancaster Court House. Every item, every aspect, has a story and a connection proving that history is neither static nor carved in stone. New stories surface, like arrowheads long buried, providing constant shifting of information that gives vitality to history. Our activities include educational programs, exhibits, living history presentations, tours, research and writing.

The Lancaster Community Library is just what its name implies—a community library. Our small professional staff can’t manage alone. We rely on dozens of volunteers to staff the circulation desk, shelve books and other materials, and handle a host of other tasks that must be done to keep the Library open and functioning smoothly.

Why not consider volunteering? Volunteers get to know the community in a way few people do. You’ll make great friends with staff and other volunteers. And best of all, you’ll be surrounded by books! All you need is a few hours to devote to Library work, a pleasant manner and a willingness to help your neighbors check out a book, use the Library’s resources, or conduct research. We’ll teach you the rest.

Here are some of the jobs that volunteers do for us. For some we’ll ask that you commit to being available at certain hours or on certain days. Others may be done on a more flexible schedule.

Positions requiring availability on a regular schedule, usually weekly:
• Front Desk assistant
• Shelving items
• Searching for lost or overdue items
• Filing registration cards
• Assisting patrons

 Positions that can be more flexible:
• Shelf reading (assuring the collection is shelved properly)
• Assisting with publicity
• Helping with mailings
• Repairing books, audiobooks, or DVDs
• Maintaining annual scrapbooks of Library’s activities
• Collecting newspapers to take to recycling
• Helping with book store
• Helping with lottery sales
• Assisting with Special Programs for Children

Find it Virginia is a collection of databases that provide free 24/7 access to resources such as newspapers, magazine and journal articles, and reference books. Materials are available for all age ranges and interests. This project is currently funded through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

Novelist Plus

• Can’t decide what to read next? Need a recommendation for a child, student, or family
  member? Use NoveList to discover your next favorite author, series, or title!

 Transparent Language Online

• Learn to speak one of 12 languages, including Arabic, Hindi, and American Sign Language
  as well as English for Spanish speakers. Rocket Languages is perfect for the business
  travelers or tourists, as well as supplementing classroom lessons for students.

VetNow

• Connect LIVE with a military benefits navigator, seven days a week between 2 and 11
  pm, for help with eligibility questions, connecting with veteran's benefits and
  community resources, transitioning from a military to civilian career, and more.

JobNow

• Connect with a certified career coach, seven days a week between 2 and 11 pm. Get help with
  résumé writing, applications, searches, and skill development needs. Also find unemployment
  assistance, résumé templates, career assessments, and more. Includes test prep resources and
  practice tests and career credentialing information for over 140 specific careers.

Entrepreneurial Learning Initative

• Use these self-paced, online classes to learn how to think like an entrepreneur as you prepare
  to launch a small business venture or plan a career path. Take your passion into the business
  world. (ELI is the equivalent of 3 college credits).
