Lancaster Community Library February Display Case
“Black Northern Neck Pioneers of Medicine”
The Lancaster Community Library’s February display showcases Northern Neck residents who have been pioneers in the medical profession.
The display’s contents are photographs, written texts, journals, and instruments used in the studies and profession of the individuals.
Included are:
Dr. Morgan E. Norris- the first Black physician for the Northern Neck and first Black coroner for the Commonwealth of VA
(a photo of his medical office is included along with his medical bag and some instruments).
Dr. Jaehn B. Charlton- the first Black physician for Northumberland County and an early proponent for using x-ray technology
(a photo of his medical office is included along with his note book as a student and his medical diploma from Meharry Medical College).
Dr. Herbert L. Veney, a graduate of Rappahannock High School, was the first Black doctor for
Richmond County and founder of the Warsaw Medical Center.
Dr. Richard M. Jenkins, a graduate of A. T. Johnson High School in Westmoreland County, became a
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a professor of microbiology at Tuskegee Institute.
Mrs. Sarah E. Nickens Campbell, Mrs. Ruby Campbell Morris, Mrs. Claudine Curry Smith, Mrs. Fannie Taylor Nelson- Midwives
Lt. Colonel John C. Curry - owner of Caprice Enterprise, Inc. whose husbandry laboratory helped in the development of the serum for the polio vaccine.
Mr. Willis Hampton Caster – Animal Laboratory technician for Howard University Medical Department.
Major Lloyd N. Hill – patient of Dr. Morgan E. Norris and a survivor of the “iron lung” treatment for polio.
The books Fight On, My Soul, written by Dr. James E. C. Norris and My Bag Was Always Packed by Mrs. Claudine Smith are featured.
QR codes with links to Lancaster VA Historical Society and A Pixie From Kilmarnock websites are included, within the display,
directing the patrons to interviews with some of the featured personalities.

On Wednesday, February 18th at 2:30pm, Dr. Norris will join us in the upstairs meeting room to discuss his book "Fight On My Soul"

We are so excited to announce our brand new Interactive Storytime, happening every third Wednesday of the month!
Can't make it to the library? No problem!
This is the perfect way for out-of-town grandparents, special adults, or working parents to join in the fun and be a part of storytime.
You can still watch us live on Facebook, but to participate and interact with us, you'll need the Zoom link.
